Heel pain affects roughly 1 out of every 10 people in the world, particularly runners and those between the ages of 40 and 60. Heel pain generally builds up and worsens over time, and most commonly it is a result of damage to the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia is the band of tissue that runs along the sole of the foot and connects the heel bone to the toes. Any damage, whether it is sudden or reoccurring over time, will cause the plantar fascia to thicken, along with the surrounding tissues and heel bone. This is known as plantar fasciitis. Other less common sources of heel pain include stress fractures, bursitis, wearing of the fat pad under the heel, or a heel spur. If you are suffering from heel pain, it is important to consult with a podiatrist to receive a proper diagnosis. Once the source of the pain is determined, your podiatrist will be able to provide treatment options for your specific condition.

Causes of Heel Pain
Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.
Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.
Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.
Why Might Heel Pain Occur?
Treatments
Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.

An ankle sprain can be a common injury during childhood. It occurs when the ankle is twisted or turned more than its normal range, causing the ligaments within the ankle to stretch or tear. Children might twist their ankles while playing, or while walking on an uneven surface. The symptoms of a sprained ankle include pain and swelling near the ankle joint, an inability to bear weight, bruising, tenderness, and a reduced range of motion in the affected ankle. Ankle sprains vary in severity from a mild grade one sprain where the ligaments overstretch, to a severe grade three sprain, in which the ligaments completely tear. If your child has symptoms of an ankle sprain, it is suggested that you seek the care of a podiatrist.

The most common causes of ankle pain include:
Symptoms
Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.
Diagnosis
Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

The majority of blisters are caused by friction. A blister is defined as a small pocket that is filled with fluid which protects the damaged skin underneath it. It is the body’s natural response in accelerating the healing process for raw skin. Blisters can happen as a result of wearing shoes that do not fit correctly or from wearing heavy boots while hiking. This condition may form more frequently in patients who have flat feet, in addition to people who are in the military. There are effective preventative methods that can be implemented which may reduce the risk of getting blisters. These can include wearing socks that absorb excess moisture from the feet and choosing shoes that fit correctly. One way to ensure that you get properly-fitted shoes is by purchasing them at the end of the day, when the feet are at their largest. If you have developed a blister on your foot, it can be quite uncomfortable, and it is suggested that you speak with a podiatrist who can offer you treatment options.
Blisters may appear as a single bubble or in a cluster. They can cause a lot of pain and may be filled with pus, blood, or watery serum. If your feet are hurting, contact Dr. Larry Cohen of New York City. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Foot Blisters
Foot blisters are often the result of friction. This happens due to the constant rubbing from shoes, which can lead to pain.
What Are Foot Blisters?
A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.
Symptoms
(Blister symptoms may vary depending on what is causing them)
Prevention & Treatment
In order to prevent blisters, you should be sure to wear comfortable shoes with socks that cushion your feet and absorb sweat. Breaking a blister open may increase your chances of developing an infection. However, if your blister breaks, you should wash the area with soap and water immediately and then apply a bandage to the affected area. If your blisters cause severe pain it is important that you call your podiatrist right away.

Bunions are a joint misalignment that occur as bony bumps at the base of the big toe, and they can be extremely painful. Bunions tend to form over time and cause the big toe to bend towards the other toes. Bunions can be caused by pressure on the forefoot, wearing poorly fitted shoes, including high heels, or trauma to the foot. Biomechanical factors such as overpronation of the foot can also lead to bunions. Treating a bunion will involve reducing pain and correcting any biomechanical issues. While orthotics are often recommended, surgery may be needed for more severe cases. If you are suffering from a bunion, consult with a podiatrist for proper treatment.
If you are suffering from bunion pain, contact Dr. Larry Cohen of New York City. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
What Is a Bunion?
Bunions are painful bony bumps that usually develop on the inside of the foot at the joint of the big toe. As the deformity increases over time, it may become painful to walk and wear shoes. Women are more likely to exacerbate existing bunions since they often wear tight, narrow shoes that shift their toes together. Bunion pain can be relieved by wearing wider shoes with enough room for the toes.
Causes
Symptoms
In order to diagnose your bunion, your podiatrist may ask about your medical history, symptoms, and general health. Your doctor might also order an x-ray to take a closer look at your feet. Nonsurgical treatment options include orthotics, padding, icing, changes in footwear, and medication. If nonsurgical treatments don’t alleviate your bunion pain, surgery may be necessary.

Children and young teenagers who frequently participate in sporting activities may complain of heel pain. This may be indicative of a condition that is referred to as Sever’s disease which affects the growth plate in the heel. Sever’s disease can be a common ailment among gymnasts, and specific symptoms often accompany it. These can include swelling, pain, and difficulty walking. Mild relief may be found when the patient walks on tiptoes, and when the affected foot is elevated. The healing process can include performing certain foot stretches, and it may be beneficial to wear a protective boot. If your child has heel pain, please speak with a podiatrist, who can effectively treat Sever’s disease, as quickly as possible.
Sever's disease often occurs in children and teens. If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain, see Dr. Larry Cohen from New York City. Our doctor can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.
Sever’s Disease
Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.
Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.
Symptoms
Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.
Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.
